Joy Udo-Gabriel bags medal in her first senior competition

NIGERIA’s 100 meters and relay race female medalist, Joy Udo-Gabriel bagged her first individual senior medal for Nigeria after she placed third in the final of the women’s 100m and was part of the Nigerian team who won gold in the relay race of the 21st edition of the just concluded African Championships.

Although she represented Nigeria in the under 20s ECOWAS competition held in Ghana, she went on to win the medals in her first senior trials.

She won the bronze medal first, regardless of her running side-by-side with the world leader in the event, Marie Josee Ta Lou, the fomer ECOWAS under 20 medalist kept her cool, and also stuck to her race plan to cross the line in 11.58s.

Ta Lou won gold Ta Lou’s wealth of experience came into fore as the Ivorian left the Nigerian athlete in her wake.

Nevertheless, Udo-Gabriel still kept on powering strong to win Nigeria’s only medal in the 100m in both the men and women categories in 11.15s, while Ghana’s Janet Amposah clinched the silver medal in 11.54s.
