My parents did not support me initially – Patience, gold winner

At the just concluded CAA tournament in Asaba, Team Nigeria bagged a total of 19 medals including 9 gold. The Nigerian female team racked in 8 gold medals while the male squad signed off with only one gold medal.

One of the sprinters, Patience George Okon, who won gold in the 4×400 meters hurdles in said that her parents did not support her at first when she declared her intentions to be an athlete.

In an interview with National Light she said “initially my parents never supported my dream in athletics and I think one of the reasons is because I’m a girl, but I persisted because I know my talent, and later on they were happy I remained with that choice.”

She further encouraged parents to make sure not to discourage their children especially their daughters when they choose to be athlete, she however urged the country to ensure that facilities and platform should be laid down in other to discover fresh talents.
