IN 2016, the announcement of Gernot Rohr, an ex-German International as the technical adviser of the super Eagles of Nigeria was received and welcomed by soccer fans with the expectation that the German technician will bring and add European touch to the national team.
The national team under the supervision of Rohr had a good jolly ride all through the FIFA qualification that had the likes of Zambia, Cameroun and Algeria to contend with.

With the Super Eagles early exit at the just concluded 2018 FIFA World Cup held at Russia, suggestions has continue to come from football faithful in the nation urging the national team handler to have a rethink on his over dependent on foreign based players considering the outcome of the performance of the Super Eagles of Nigeria which has caused many Nigerians to loose confidence in his style of coaching, many are of the opinion that if after two years, Rohr cannot boost of any few home based players he discovered and build up to the world stage, it is dis-service to the country and soccer fans as a whole. Countries like Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia have shock the world with their home based players.

Coach Westernhof (former coach of the Super Eagles) has continued to be a case study, who built and groomed a formidable team with the combination of both home based and foreign-based players to stardom in Tunisia and USA ’94.

Coach Stephen Keshi of the blessed memory used and allowed home-based players to fight and struggle for jersey with the overhyped foreign based players in 2013 and won the Nation’s Cup in South Africa with a home based player (Sunday Mba) scoring the only goal at the final game which won the tournament for the country (Nigeria).

The Super Eagles did not only won the AFCON but also reached second round in Brazil 2014 World Cup losing narrowly on a disallowed goal against France (we all know the goal was clean and would have qualified Nigeria to the next stage of the mundial).

Fans and addict followers of the (NPFL) has expressed their displeasure over the attitude of the Super Eagles coach in snubbing talents on the Nigeria league stating that “Any coach who cannot go down to the domestic league venues to scout for players and nurture them to stardom would be regarded as lazy and does not deserve to be coach of the national team.

Also, the choice of Rohr to be coaching the national team from outside the country has been condemned. Suggestions have been severally made for the coach to stay permanently in the country so that he can have an eye on the NPFL.

Surprisingly is the fact that Rohr recently revealed that he rejected lucrative offers from some countries after the 2018 World Cup in Russia just to stay with the Super Eagles.

The German tactician confessed that the relationship he has with the Nigeria Football federation who has been supportive from inception has made the environment very conducive for him.

Worthy to note is the fact that NFF led by Amaju Pinnick deserved some accolades for making it possible that all assistance, cooperation and provision are given to the Super Eagles handler so as to be successful in his mission.

September 2 has been announced to be the date for the resumption of the domestic league (NPFL) and football lovers are hoping that these time, Rohr will take the bull by the horn, raise to the occasion and do the needful by keeping an eye on the talents waiting to show the world the stuff they are made of.

15million monthly salary is enough to bring smiles into the faces of over 180million Nigerians and until he justifies his pay, fans will continue to talk because as the saying goes “To whom much is given, much is expected.”
