Medical experts speak on exercising imperatives

ACCORDING to Wikipedia free Encyclopedia news source, exercising is any bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health and wellness.

It is performed for various reasons including increasing growth and development, preventing aging, strengthening muscles and the cardiovascular systems, training athletic skills, weight loss or maintenance, and also for enjoyment.

Many individuals choose to exercise publicly outdoors where they can congregate in groups, socialize and enhance well being.

For the chairman emeritus of the Awka Zonal branch of the Nigerian medical association Dr. Oliver Onwughalu, exercise enhances the body metabolism to perform optimally.

According to Dr. Onwughalu, there is no age limit to exercising, meaning that the old and the young can exercise according to their capacities.

He advised people of the older generation to avoid over exercise beyond their capacity, but engage in slow and less vigorous exercise to avoid complications.

For those with illness or cardiovascular challenges, the medical expert advised them to consult their doctors for medical advice before embarking on any physical exercise.

For the Chief Executives of various establishments whose duties demand sitting down for long hours, Dr. Onwughalu warned that such sedentary lifestyles could lead to some diseases and recommended indoor exercises to tone up their muscles.

He alerted ex-athletes and persons who had long passed their peak of performing optimally to beware the effect of aging and engage in less strenuous exercise to avoid complications.

Dr. Onwughalu who is the medical director of the Zion hospital Nawfia, made references to the robust and healthy lives enjoyed by the fore bearers of the present generation which manifested in their indulgence in farming and other active life styles.

Another medical expert Dr. Cyprian Afunugo who also spoke on the benefits of exercising said it is a must for everybody irrespective of age.

According to Dr. Afunugo, exercising helps to keep the body fit and makes for a healthier living.

For those that are incapacitated one way or the other due to one illness or the other, he recommended them having their family doctors for medical advice.

Dr. Ifunugo stressed that people who do not engage in one form of exercise or the other risks the chances of falling sick.
