- Umahi mourns, empowers deceased’s family
THE whole south east (zone c) of the Nigeria Union of journalist (NUJ) were all smiles and happiness as one of its own, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, was elected National president of NUJ.
The Thisday Newspaper reporter emerged the president at the general election held in Abeokuta, Ogun state on October 5.
While the jubilation was still on, the sad news of the tragic death of one of the vibrant members and vice chairman of Ebonyi State council of the NUJ, Comrade (sir) Sam Nwake, broke.
Nweke died in the hands of armed robbers who blocked the bus that Ebonyi contingents were travelling back in after the just concluded 6th Triennial delegates conference of NUJ at Abeokuta, Ogun State between 3rd to 5th October 2018.The incident happened along Nkalagu area of the state on Friday night.
Reports indicate that Nweke was hit by another vehicle after armed robbers ordered him to lie down during robbery operations.
As a mark of respect, NUJ zone c has declared a week-long mourning period for the departed colleague.

Meanwhile Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has announced the immediate appointment of Sam Nweke, late Vice Chairman, Ebonyi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalist’s widow as his Technical Assistant.
Gov. Umahi also announced a donation of N5million Education Trust Fund to take care of the late journalist’s children’s education, provisions for house rent and N1m to boost the wife’s business. He stated this when he visited the family in Abakaliki on Monday.
The governor also donated a Sienna Car for conveying the kids to school just as he promised to give the late journalist a state burial.
Governor David Umahi expressed great shock over the death of Nweke, who he described as a great journalist and believer in his administration’s resolve to develop all sectors of the state economy simultaneously using mass media as vehicle for social engineering.
The Governor further commiserated with the family of the late NUJ Vice Chairman, the Ebonyi Broadcasting Corporation (EBBC) and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ in the state.
He expressed optimism that security agencies will carry out full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and bring the perpetrators to book while praying God to grant his soul eternal rest.
