Mad woman caught with N.2m in Anambra

SECURITY agents and government officials yesterday arrested a middle-aged woman suspected to be mentally challenged with money worth over N200, 000.

Eyewitness said the woman was always seen around ARROMA Junction area at refuse dumps, but was nabbed by officials from the state’s Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Child Development.

The officials, who were on patrol to enforce a recent order to clear mendicants from major streets and highways in Awka, approached the woman and led her into their van, despite her protest that she would not leave the location.

“The officials told her they could not carry all the waste she referred to as property, but she should take anything that was most important among all she had. That was when she ransacked the waste and dug out money which was neatly stacked according to their denomination. The money which consisted of all denominations but mostly small bills were very big, and that was what attracted people here,” the eyewitness recalled.

Although the woman did not disclose the source of the money, it was suspected that the money may be proceeds from alms she received from passers-by. Another eyewitness, however, said she may also have made the money from men who sneak into her ‘house’ at night.

Efforts to reach Commissioner for Women’ Affairs and Child Development, Ndidi Mezue, and confirm the incident was not fruitful.
