Female Banker, other swept by flood in Onitsha

A FEMALE staff of First Bank in Onitsha, Oluchi Nwafor, was among the people drowned in a ravaging flood at Oduke Layout, Obosi, Anambra State on Sunday.

The other recovered victim, whose identity could not be identified at press time was allegedly recovered along Igwe Nwakobi Road, few meters fromwhere the female banker’s corpse was waged by heaps of refuse after the rain

National Light gathered that the heavy rains destroyed houses, properties and market places in Obosi and environs.
Narrating the incident to journalists, President General, Oduke Community Resident Association, Nicholas Okechukwu, in grief said the residents had been suffering from raging flood over the years since a construction company that handled the road project along Ezeiweka Road channeled the drainage on their layout. He stated that since then, they have been experiencing serious flooding whenever it rains.

According to him, preliminary investigation revealed that the female banker was rushing home to ensure the safety of her children when she was swept off by the ravaging flood. Okechukwu has passionately appealed to Governor Willie Obiano to quickly intervene in their plight by declaring a state of emergency on the flood disaster in the area, which he said had claimed more than 12 lives so far.

The state police image maker, Haruna Mohanned, while confirming the report stated that a police patrol team attached to Obosi Police Division has been drafted to the area.

According to him, the team was led by the Divisional Police Officer, Usman Ibrahim, who took the victims to Unity Hospital Obosi, where they were certified dead.

Meanwhile, the state police commissioner, Garba Umar, has urged members of the public to stay away from flood ravaging areas.
