New minimum wage: Govs tread softly

SOURCES have revealed that Nigerian governors under the auspices of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) may beat a retreat in their position on the ongoing agitation for new minimum wage by workers across the federation.

Although details are still sketchy, an emergency meeting of NGF was convened in Abuja last night, with Gov Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State presiding, to harmonise individual governors’ proposal before coming out with their final stand to lay the controversy to rest.

But a source privy to the consultations preceding the meeting hinted that governors agreed to the N30,000.00 demand by workers to defuse tension from the polity.

The source stated that governors opted to avert the economic and political weight of a full-blown, indefinite nationwide industrial action with elections coming around the corner, adding that the new notice of strike issued to governments at all tiers by organied labour on Monday may have dictated the governors’ U-turn.

However, Head Media and Public Affairs of NGF, Abdulrazaque Barkindo, confirmed that governors resolved to accept demands put forward by organised labour.
