INIESTA hits back at Pele’s claim on MESSI

SPANISH veteran and former Barcelona  star, Andres Iniesta has riposted Pele’s scathing assessment of Lionel Messi by reiterating the Barcelona star is the ‘best player in history’.

Iniesta and Xavi are among those who have repeatedly placed their former Barcelona team-mate on the pedestal as the best player in world football, but Pele holds a conflicting opinion and said last week he believes Diego Maradona was all-round better then his Argentina counterpart.

The Brazil legend also claimed Messi is over-reliant on his left foot and is one-dimensional by saying: ‘He only uses one foot, only has one skill and doesn’t head well.

However, Iniesta, who now plies his trade at Japanese club, Vissel Kobe, has jumped to the defence of the Argentina star.

He told reporters at a promotional event on Wednesday: ‘I do not want to answer what Pele said.

‘But he (Messi) is the best player in history. He’s got all the records: headers, skills, right-footed shots, left-footed shots. I have not seen anyone do what he does and every year he exceeds my expectations.

‘(Being) (fifth in the Ballon d’Or voting) is not an insult, but for me he is the best. It would be bad to say that it was unfair for (Luka) Modric to win, he had a great season.’
