36 burnt corpses in Enugwu-Ukwu General Hospital identified

 AT least 36 of the 50 corpses burnt at Eugwu-Ukwu General Hospital Mortuary have been identified by the forensic pathologists.

Disclosing this at Nawgu, Dunukofa Local Government Area, while inaugurating Comprehensive Health Centre at Nawgu, the Health Commissioner, Joe Akabuike said the government had engaged experts to identify the dead bodies destroyed by fire beyond recognition by relatives.

Akabuike further stated that already, 36 bodies identified had been taken to another mortuary at the Chukwuemeka  Odumegwu  Ojukwu University   Teaching Hospital, Amaku for embalmment and for onward collection by their relatives.

The commissioner called on the morticians and members of the public to keep their environment clean and reduce incessant bush fires especially during harmattan season.

He stated that investigation was ongoing to ascertain the remote cause of the inferno which happened on Decenber 29, 2018 at the interior end of Eugwu-ukwu General Hospital.

Meanwhile some of the relatives from Nawfia and Eugwu-ukwu who have collected the corpses of their dead relation, said they paid N5, 000 to the morticians to prepare the bodies for burial but warned them not to open the coffin in view of the bad condition of the corpses.

An indigene of Eugwu-Ukwu whose younger brother was among the death, Francis Nwakpudolu frowned at the negligence of the mortuary attendant and called for seriousness on part of all medical workers and attendants.

Also in Nawfia, two corpses released for burial were not displayed for last respect but were hurriedly buried.
