Balerdi happy to play for Dortmund

NEW signing, Leonardo Balerdi is delighted to have joined Borussia Dortmund, and is determined to make his mark at the club.

Borussia Dortmund completed the signing of the  highly rated Argentine centre back for 15 million euros earlier this week, fending off interest from the likes of Barcelona and Juventus. And the 19 year old has now revealed just what Borussia Dortmund fans can expect from him on the pitch.

I was hoping (for the transfer to be completed) for days and I am so glad to finally be here”, Balerdi told BVB TV. “The training is very intensive, but my teammates are making a great effort to help me integrate into the side. Dortmund is a great city and a top-level club. So I am very happy here.”

“I have an attacking, aggressive style of play. When I pull the shirt on, I’ll fight for it until I drop and always try and win.”

Balerdi, who joined Argentine giants, Boca Juniors as a 14 year old, has admitted that while it was not easy to leave his homeland for the Bundesliga at such a young age, support from family has helped him a lot.

“Obviously it is hard because I’m only 19 and it is a massive change. But I have had lots of help and my family supports me. So things are going well and I am very relaxed.”

It is likely that Balerdi will only be used sparingly for the rest of the season as Borussia Dortmund look to integrate him into the first team. The club used this philosophy with the likes of Jadon Sancho, Dan Axel Zagadou and Manuel Akanji last season, and now they are all important parts of the team.

Fans will have to wait until next month to see Balerdi make his Borussia Dortmund debut, after it was confirmed by the club that the defender has been released to represent Argentina U20s at the upcoming South American U-20 Championships in Chile. Argentina are in Group B and will face Paraguay, Ecuador, Uruguay and Peru in the group stage.
