Consider Kimmich, Xavi tells Barca

FC Barcelona legend, Xavi has gone on the record with his recommendation of German defensive midfielder, Joshua Kimmich to the staff at his former club.

Speaking alongside the Stuttgart youth academy graduate, he said, “Joshua is the present and future of FC Bayern and the German national team. And you really can play in any position.

You would be the perfect player for FC Barcelona! As previously with Philipp Lahm, Joshua Kimmich could without any problems play at Barcelona. That would fit well.”

While these comments might raise some eyebrows at the Camp Nou, the squad needs neither a right-back nor a midfielder. It does need a defensive midfielder to act as backup and successor to Sergio Busquets, but Joshua Kimmich has evolved into more of a right-back role.

Under current Bayern head coach, Niko Kovač, Kimmich has played in midfield in some games. But he adapted to the right-back position completely under Pep Guardiola and mostly plays there. Moreover, it is highly unlikely that the Bavarians would allow him to leave.

Till date, Kimmich has made 146 appearances in all competitions for Bayern, scoring 16 goals and providing 29 assists. He has played 70 games as right-back, 27 games as a central midfielder, 24 games as a defensive midfielder and 20 matches as a centre-back.

He is a very valuable asset for any manager. But Ernesto Valverde already has that kind of a player in La Masia graduate Sergi Roberto. So, while Xavi is right in pointing out that his skill-set and versatility make him a good player for Barça, his signing is not feasible.
