Four persons feared dead, scores injured in Eket gas explosion

AT least four persons were confirmed dead and scores injured in a terrible gas explosion in Eket, Akwa Ibom State at the weekend.

National Light visited the site of the explosion, a welding and fabrication workshop along Eket-Ibeno Road immediately after the incident and noticed that some human parts were found scattered around the workshop while the dead and injured were taken to the hospital.

A survivor of the blast, one Akaninyene Ekong said he had gone to the fabrication yard to look for employment as a welder and that while work was on-going, he heard a big bang like a bomb explosion inside the hanger with thick smoke covering everywhere.

“My friend Tony Umobit who asked me to come and see the Managing Director of the company for employment was among the dead and his body was badly mutilated beyond recognition,” Ekong said.

Further investigation revealed that the boss of the company known as Londmike Enterprises, Elder Michael Bassey, a major contractor with Exxon Mobil was not in the premises as at the time of the incident, but said collapsed and fainted on hearing the sad news.

The latest gas explosion brings to two such major disasters in Eket in the last three years.
The earlier gas explosion in Eket occurred along AfahaUqua Road which claimed the lives of seven persons including an officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
