Herdsmen destroy houses, farmlands in Anambra West

CHIEF Mathias Ameke a native of Mmiata Anam in Anambra-West Local Government Area of Anambra State has said that acute hunger and famine await Anambra citizens this year following the invasion and consequent destruction of agricultural products in Anambra-West by suspected Fulani Herdsmen.

Ameke who spoke with our correspondent in Awka concerning the development , stated that farmers in the area suffered severe pain and agony during last year’s flood disaster and they were currently unable to pay back the loans they borrowed from Microfinance Banks.

He said crops worth millions of naira have been destroyed by cattle and that each farmer borrowed not less than N200,000 payable with interest, pointing out that the crops were removed from the root in the dead of the night by the animals .

According to him, the peculiarities of the whole saga was that the cattle were led into the farmlands by the herdsmen at midnight and at daytime , all the farmlands were destroyed completely and that there has been no compensation whatever from the government.

Ameke recalled that since November last year , herdsmen have been invading Anambra-West , destroying agricultural products in the area, saying that farmers have absconded from their homes for fear of being killed by the herdsmen and their houses are broken-into by the Fulani cattle rearers.
