Red Cross fetes physically challenged, others

ANAMBRA State central council of the Nigerian Red Cross Society recently held their 28th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at their headquarters in Amawbia.

The event was declared open by the Grand Commander of state’s Red Cross, Igwe Keneth Orizu of  Nnewi and grand patron of Anambra Traditional Ruler’s Council.

The state chairman, Anambra State Red Cross Society, Justice P.A.C Obidigwe, former  Anambra State Chief Judge in his address, enumerated all the achievements the branch recorded such as assisting the victims of flood ravage, fire disasters and other life touching situations, saying that Red Cross has seven based fundamental principles , including humanity, impartiality, neutrality, unity and universality, with a motto, ‘Through Humanity to peace’.

He said that the International Red Cross and Red Cross Crescent Movement were born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield. The state branches, he said, got assistance from their international bodies for their duties and operational logistics.

He finally said that Red Cross is a voluntary relief movement not promoted for any desire to attract gains. He commended the media for their visible roles in propagating the services of the Red Cross in Anambra State.

Igwe Keneth Orizu performed the tape cutting that saw another part of the day’s occasion where over 58 wheel chairs were distributed to cripples who came from different parts of the state.

In an interview after the day’s activities, the deputy chairman, Anambra Red Cross Society, Prof. Emeka Katchy  told our correspondent that they have always used their annual AGM to reach out to destitute and emergency victims of life-mishaps.

He said that both governments’ grants will further encourage them in the discharge of their duties.

The AGM was used to remember the fallen heroes on the seat of chairmanship such as Retired Justice Kpajie Nwokedi,  Dr. Dozie Ikedife  and others.
