ANGLING for senate presidency has started as senators-elect now look forward to the berth of the ninth senate due to commence in June 2019.
This was disclosed through a statement made to the media by Delta state born senator and representative of Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator, Ovie Omo-Agege on Wednesday in Warri, Delta State.
According to the Senator, President Muhammadu Buhari is a strong factor in the selection of the next leadership of the senate and would be actively involved in the process. ”Anybody who is going to be Senate President, in the ninth senate, must be somebody who is loyal to the president, the party and the constitution.”
This, according to them is to ensure the choice of the leadership of the red chamber syncs with who he wants to work with.
National Light newspaper gathered that the move is to prevent repeat of the 2015 mistake by both the president and the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) party, in the exercise that produced Sen. Bukola Saraki as the president of the senate.
It will be recalled that following the outcome of the February 23, 2019 elections, APC would certainly produce the next Senate president having won the majority of senatorial seats.
Omo-Agege emphasised ‘the party’s primary concerns to include not allowing opportunists to ride on the back of the party and secure plum positions only for their interests at the expense of the party.
He expressed optimism that whoever emerges as the senate president this time, irrespective of the zone should work harmoniously with President Buhari.
