Election: Widow, others feared dead, scores injured

NO FEWER than two persons including a mother of two and a widow were feared killed and many others sustained various degree of injury in Ikot Udo Ossion unit 004, ward 11 in Ukanafun LGA when soldiers allegedly opened fire when invited to quell disturbances at the unit during the March 9, election.

Our political correspondent in the area learnt that trouble started at the unit when supporters of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the People Democratic Party (PDP), engaged themselves in alleged plan by one of the parties to hijack the electoral materials while the exercise was on-going.

It was gathered that when supporters of the APC who were many at the unit resisted, soldiers were invited in and allegedly opened fire, indiscriminately causing the death of a 25-year old father of 2, Ubokutom Ezekiel Sampson who was shot at a close range while one Roselyn Okon Archibong, a widow with four children was hit and died at the instance.

The families of the deceased members when contacted described the incident as very unfortunate.

Meanwhile, attempt to inquire from men of the Nigerian Army in Ibagwa on election day proved abortive as they resisted comment on what led to the shooting.
