Man arrested for kidnap, death of Catholic priest

A MAN, working at the parish of the kidnapped and murdered Priest of Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Rev. Fr. Rapuluchukwu Clement Ugwu, has been arrested by the Police of Enugu State Command.

Fr. Clement  was kidnapped at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Obinofia Ndiuno, Ezeagu Local Government Area, Enugu State, on March 3, shortly after returning from a meeting and his decomposing body was later found not more than 20kilometer from the parish.

Reliable source that has been in touch with the investigation disclosed to newsmen that the suspect had a misunderstanding with the priest over missing church money who then threatened to deal with the priest in the course of the quarrel.

A close source disclosed that the kidnappers withdrew money from the priest account using his ATM card and later called the priest’s immediate family to send N20million to them before his decomposing body was  found by a woman going to her farm. The source also disclosed that during the dressing of the corpse, gun wounds were seen on the chest and heart of the priest.

When the Commissioner of Police, Enugu, Suleiman Balarabe was contacted by newsmen, he confirmed that arrest has been made and some of them arrested were close to the priest.

He said that men of his command where going to Abuja to get the tools needed for the investigation.

“Those arrested were people around him. Before the kidnap, there were series of communication around him, we are taking our findings to Abuja to get technical aid to investigate the communication around him”.

The Commissioner of Police disclosed that the police are on trail of the kidnappers and closing in on their gang leader who hails from Oji River in Enugu State. In the meantime, the suspect is aiding the police with the investigation.
