Anambra Library Board donates books to Awka Prison

THE Acting Director Anambra State Library Board, Nkechi Udeze, stated this during the library books and learning materials presentation to Anambra State Prison Command, Amawbia, as part of activities to mark this year World Book Day.

She thanked the management of the prison command for their effort towards the education of the inmates and urged the inmates to make most of the educational and learning tools at their disposal.

“Without reading, we won’t be here today. Without reading, I wonder how the world would look like. Been tenacious and persistent in reading will change your life. We are here to encourage you to read. We always encourage people to read. Reading opens many closed doors. It helps you to know beyond your horizon. Your time here won’t be a waste, if you read to transform your life. Some people have come out prison better educated and transformed you can emulate them.”

Receiving the materials Chief Superintendent of Prison, Christian Udeagwu on behalf of the Deputy Controller of Prison, Edwin Akabueze thanked the management of the library for donating books and other learning materials to the prison and charged the inmates to make good use of the materials. “I won’t advise you to try ignorance. We know that the world has gone digital with reading but we cannot do without the traditional method of learning or acquiring knowledge. We appreciate the Library board for this kind gesture and promise the judicious use of the donation.”

The library board continued with the celebration at the Prof. Kenneth Dike State Central Library, Awka, where it hosted pupils reading, and other intellectual and creative exercises. Speaking at event, chairman of the occasion, writer, Publisher and Member of the Board of Trustee of All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA), Elder Benjamin Oyedeji, challenge the pupils to imbibe reading culture to read because they want to contribute to the growth and development and not because they want to pass exam.

“By reading you can take the challenge to rescue Nigeria. Reading makes you confident. Reading will stand you out among your contemporaries, by it reading you can find solution to problems and that is one of the ways to make it in life.”
