Tragedy in Obowo as police kill teenager

ANGRY youths in Obowo, Imo State set ablaze Otoko Police Divisional Headquarters in Obowo Local Government Area. They also razed down police barracks within  the divisional headquarters and carted away all arms as the divisional police officer (DPO) and his men took to their heels for safety.

The incidence followed the alleged killing of a youth believed to be an undergraduate by a trigger happy police officer.

The trouble ensued when the slain boy, Ogbunigwe Ikenna from Umuoke Obowo allegedly confronted the said police officer on a very minor argument at a restaurant in the area and the police officer, according to the report pulled his gun and shot  Ikenna dead.The Police man on realizing that youths present at the scene were trying to plan for his apprehension, started firing gun shots on the air after which he fled.

Meanwhile, when contracted, the Imo State Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) Orlando Ikoku said that the officer on the run shot the deceased on self defense.

Governor, Emeka Ihedioha and other government functionaries were in Obowo yesterday to have first hand information of the fracas involving youths of the area and the police, regarding the death of the boy.

The governor who never hides his feelings, promised that the government will unravel the remote cause of the matter and probably do justice to it.

He said that no amount of provocation is worth the blood of any human being, wondering why the victim was shot rather than  both parties settling the matter amicably.
