Nigerian Girl Guide Association , Anambra State Chapter recently marked her centenary anniversary.
The event took place at Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board Hall Awka.
In her remarks, the Commissioner, Nigeria Girl Guide Association, Anambra State Chapter, Hellen Obi, said the Guide was a place where women discover their potentials ,noting that women are valuable in the society, because they help in building homes. “..there is an adage that says when you train a woman, you train a nation.”
She added that the Guide is a place of peace, where people partner one another, advising mothers to be a watch dog on their girl child to avoid being victims of sexual abuse. She stressed the need for sex education at early stage to know when they are harassed. ” When we talk about sex education, mothers shy away from it ,but we have a language we talk with and arrive at the sex level.”
State Adviser, Girl Guide, Mrs Uche Orakwute, said the association had gone far to train girls ,who represented Nigeria in the world due to leadership quality. She advised women to come out en-mass and join the association irrespective of tribe, age and religion for betterment of their lives.
District Commissioner, Onitsha North, Ekene Njelita, said the association was a place people develop their fullest potentials as responsible citizens. She advised girls not to be victims of sexual abuse , rather report or run to the nearest person or authority once they noticed anybody touching them abnormally.
Lecturer in the Faculty of Law, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Dr Chinazo Umeobika, who was enrolled as a matron and friend of the Guide said she was happy to identity with the Guide, saying that many of the girls do not know their rights, hence the reason they face some violence.
High points of the event was the cutting of centenary cake, presentation of songs and enrolment of matrons and friends of the Guide.
