Conflicting accounts on casualty toll

A THREE-STOREY building still under construction has collapsed at Umuejimoke Village, Ihiala in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anamabra State, with conflicting accounts trailing its casualty toll.

Efforts to ascertain the exact number of deaths and injuries recorded yielded little fruits; some unconfirmed reports claim that many lives were lost in the incident.

A resident of the area who craves anonymity said the incident occurred early in the morning when workers had not  come, wondering how anyone could have died or be trapped in the building when nobody was there at the time it collapsed.

According to him, it was not long after he heard shrieking sounds from the building which was very close to his residence when the entire structure came tumbling down, adding that the owner of the building is an indigene of a nearby town to Ihiala who deals in alcoholic drinks.

Efforts to get comments of one Mr. Nnamdi Igbokaenyi, who the eyewitness said was the engineer at the site, was futile. But it was learnt that Igbokenyi was not the engineer who started the building project.

However, there is an unconfirmed account that the first engineer may have disengaged his services when the owner could not take some of his professional advice.

Similarly, there is also another account that the incident may have occurred following an acid spray that brought the building to rubbles in just seconds. A previous dispute over ownership of the land was fingered as an issue that may have brought about such attack.

According to a middle-aged man who claims to be a brother of the owner, only an acid attack on the building could have brought it down given all due diligence paid to the project right from foundation, both in terms of expertise and procurement.

But a bulldozer was seen making its way into the premises after an inspection team from Ihiala L.G.A and some regulatory agencies of the state government visited the site.
