Graft: Atiku’s son-in-law, lawyer to know bail fate today

A FEDERAL High Court sitting in Lagos, yesterday, reserved hearing of the bail application of two associates of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, one Abdullahi Babalele and one Uyiekpen Giwa-Osagie who are his son-in-law and his lawyer respectively, as well as the latter’s brother, one Erhunse Giwa-Osagie.

The court, which was presided over by Justice Nicholas Oweibo made the order while remanding the three persons in prison custody after their arraignment by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on allegation of money laundering which it said they committed during the last general elections.

While Atiku’s lawyer was separately arraigned for allegedly laundering $2million, his son-in-law was docked on a two-count charge of conspiracy and making cash payment of $140,000 without going through financial institution by procuring one Bashir Mohammed to aid on February 20.

According to prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, the sum exceeded the amount authorised by law to be transacted in cash contrary to Section 18(a) and (c) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under Section 16(2)(b).

The three defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge before Justice Oweibo adjourned hearing of their application till today.
