Nigerian Customs applaud Makinde



NIGERIA Customs Service (NCS), Oyo/Osun Area Command has applauded Governor Seyi Makinde, for admonishing Kishi community in Irepo Local Government Area of Oyo State, on the repercussions of making their community inaccessible to officers of NCS.

The command has also commended the leadership and people of Kishi  in their effort to foster a healthy rapport with officers of the Nigerian Customs in the course of discharging their duties  which include, suppressing smuggling, facilitating trade and making business environment congenial for citizens in legitimate trades which was not the case in the past.

Speaking during the half year briefing to journalists, Comptroller Oyo/ Osun Area Command, Abdullahi Zulkifli, said that Kishi, being a border town made it renowned for smuggling which prompted the command to commission an outpost and lay siege on smugglers.

Commenting on the Command’s seizures from January to July 2019, Zulkifli informed that Oyo/Osun Area Command made 7,951 seizures and items seized worth N210,826,503.66million.

The seized goods included 93 vehicles, over 60,000 bags of parboiled rice, 730 kegs of vegetable oil, and 39 bales of second hand clothing.

Other items are 50 bags of sugar, over 900 used tyres and six bundles of textile materials.

Zulkifli said 35 suspected smugglers were arrested in connection with the operations while five persons had been charged to court.

While saying  that the Area Command  has generated  the sum of N23,878,395,911.8million from January to July, 2019, surpassing that of 2018, the Comptroller said the Command will leave no stone unturned in combating smuggling and challenges posed by smugglers.

“We will continue to intensify our intelligence and operational strategies in the course of suppressing smuggling and generating more revenue. We will continue to dialogue, engage and educate local and business communities on the security and economic implications of smuggling, while carrying out the statutory functions of enforcing compliance with the government fiscal policy,” Zulkifli stated.
