ASWAMA, others clean up Ifite Awka

THE administration of Governor Willie Obiano has done and is still doing more towards ensuring proper waste disposal and management in the state, channeled towards promoting clean, safe, healthy and conducive environment for all.

This statement was made by the Managing Director of Anambra State Waste Management Authority, (ASWAMA), Amechi Akorah, during the  intensive environmental sanitation exercise, with theme “Go Clean Down Town Ifite, Awka”, in partnership with Africa Clean-up Initiative and Student Union Government(SUG), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Saturday.

According to Akorah, infrequent evacuation of refuse from their designated points is now a story of the past, adding that the just concluded clean-up exercise from Amansea culvert down to Book Foundation, Ifite, Awka, will be a continuous exercise every Saturday before the main environmental clean-up day every month to ensure that people are adhering to the ethics of the exercise,  adding that the exercise  will be at Ngozika Estate on Saturday.

“  I thank all who participated in making the exercise a successful one. We are also expecting that the  business community, Property Owner’s Union and other stakeholders will get more involved or prepared to join every saturday before the main environmental clean up day.

The area has a large concentration of student hostels and lodges in a largely physically unplanned environment, so it makes it very easy for the neigbourhood to be littered.

After the exercise, starting from Monday, August 26, we are going to begin a serious enforcement for proper waste disposal. We will get involved again with the security, SUG UNIZIK, business community,

bus drivers, shop owners, as well as Awka South Local Government to partner in maintaining these corridor by putting people to monitor the area, taking charge of litter points and directing people to the designated locations to dump their waste, tied and bagged securely “

On her part, the Coordinator of Africa Clean-up Initiative(ACI), Funmi Adeniyi, said that she was delighted that the clean-up exercise and sensitisation went as planned, and in line with the organization’s mantra of raising citizens that are environmentally aware and responsible.

While commending the state government for intervention in the area, the President of Student Union Government (SUG) UNIZIK, thanked the Managing Director, ASWAMA, Africa Cleanup Initiative, Anambra Chapter, entire executives of SUG, students and all that fully participated in the exercise

“The downtown is always known to be the dirtiest and constitutes a lot of waste. So far, so good, we are able to gradually change the mind set of habitants and students within the area on how to keep the environment. Today I’m happy because the turnout was encouraging” he said

Similarly, the Director of Transport, UNIZIK, Chukwuwike Joseph Okafor, said, “One thing about environmental sanitation is that it starts with me, you and everybody. I’m seeing the movement as promising

and pray it continues like this. I encourage people to maintain and not litter their environment…”

The cleanup exercise, which started around 8; 00am till about 1; 12pm attracted some other people within the area.  A  food vendor,  Chinwe Elechi, said, “when I saw them clearing everywhere despite the rain that fell during the exercise, I was happy. They really helped to make everywhere clean. It is my duty to keep my environment clean, so I will never wait for the authority to force me to keep my surrounding clean.

They say that cleanliness is next to Godliness, so from now, I will not wait for them to force me to do the right thing by properly disposing my refuse”.

For Kelechi Okafor, a hair stylist in Ifite, who was spotted in front  of his saloon, “I must say that they did an excellent job by keeping the environment clean. It is very important but I will like to add that they should inform owners of shops, make it mandatory that each of them  must be available for the next clean up exercise and those that didn’t come out will have to pay fine”.
