Efforts should be channeled to education, infrastructure – Senator Onyeabo Obi

IN JANUARY 1980, Leaders of the then Anambra South area of the old Anambra State, led on that visit by my own father, 1st Republic Senator (Chief) Z. C. Obi (now deceased), presented to the then President of the Senate, Dr Joseph Wayas, a Memorandum from the eight then local governments, together with the Ayamelum Clan (excised from the then Uzo-Uwani LGA) for the creation of what is the present Anambra State, out of the old Anambra State.

The Memorandum was signed by the two Senators – Chief N. N. Anah (now deceased) and me – representing the area, the then Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Edwin Ume-Ezeoke (now deceased) and other Members of the House, Members of the then Anambra State House of Assembly from the area and all the elected councillors in the area.

The memorandum formed the basis on which the present Anambra State was later created.

I am happy to state that the hopes and aspirations which formed the rationale for our demand for the creation of the state have been vindicated.

The state has maintained its pride of place as the ‘Light of the Nation, especially in the field of education, with our students at the secondary school level winning laurels in national and overseas fora. Security of life and property has also been largely achieved.

In the next 10 years, projected to the next 20 and 50 years, greater efforts and resources should be channeled to achieve comparable results in healthcare, infrastructure (including potable water supply) and erosion control.

There should be a sustained effort to encourage basic education before boys go into apprenticeships or trade and basic adult education for those living and trading or in other works in the state.

The future of our state is bright and both government and citizens must work together to promote and achieve this. Long live our Anambra State!
