HOW was the situation of housing in the sector in 1991?

The issue of housing was a critical issue. It has been a case of housing deficit. You understand that housing is one of the basic requirements of man aside food and clothing. The problem had been: how do we provide housing for the teeming population?

Over the years, government has found it increasingly difficult to provide houses for the people. It has become the major responsibility of individuals to struggle to acquire and build houses for themselves, even though it is one of the primary functions of government. It has been proved by all that government is increasingly finding it difficult to provide adequate housing for the population.

There had been policies upon policies on housing but it seems to die on  paper work. For example, we hear housing for all in the year 2020 and so on. Policies have been coming and going without fulfillment; thereby raising the question: why is it that we don’t have enough housing? The problem is that the population is growing but the provision of housing for the teeming population is not adequate.

How is it today in Anambra State?

Anambra State in the 1990s is very different from today. The population had galloped. The housing requirement has increased even though private partnership has come in developing estates; most housing provision targets high-income individuals. The state government is doing its best in bettering the lives of the people, though there are grounds for improvement. Another Question to ponder is: how do we provide housing for low-income groups; artisans, petty trader, etc? How long would they save to afford a house of their own? The state government need to step up their beat to make sure this aspect of governance is treated technically.

Why is it as it is today?

The present state of things in the state is due to non-coherence to building policies. It is not just enough to design a policy for housing. You have to design policies that will drive technology and innovation in the sector. What kind of building materials do we need? Materials that can stand the test of time that you can combine to provide houses. Take note that technology is research but is the government ready to sponsor such?

How will it be tomorrow?

It can improve. The issue is: is the government willing and ready to do the needful; to make life comfortable to the citizenry?

How do you want it to be tomorrow?

The political will by the state government must be there to provide housing. If the government can focus on this agenda, housing, it will make things easier for both the leaders and the led.
