Rotary Club, Awka installs female president

ROTARY Club of Awka Smithtown, District 9142, Sunday, installed her fourth and first female president, Uzoamaka Okonkwo.

The event attracted eminent personalities, including government officials, traditional rulers, heads of security agencies and Rotary members within and outside the state.

Immediate past president of the club,  Tochi Amalu, while handing over to Rtn. Uzoamaka, said he was happy and confident that the club made the right choice by appointing Uzoamaka as the president.

According to him, “looking at her qualities, passion, dedication and influence, I’m confident she will perform her duties well as the president. Also, I want to remind myself that I am only  successful when my successor is successful”.

In her remarks, the newly installed president appreciated the club for appointing her,  saying the club is not a gender biased club.

While speaking to the press, she said, “my aim is to do better than my predecessors”.

Among other things, she has mapped out a tree planting campaign as one of the projects she hopes to carry out in her year.

She added also that her club will organise  a free cervical cancer screening, blood donation and also provide study materials to the unfortunate students in Awka and environs.

High points of the event were installation of  the new president, donations, and presentation of awards to deserving members of the public who cut across various sectors of the society, people and organizations for their contributions to the club and society; some of who includes, Anambra Fire Service Chief, Martin Agbili, Lady Ngozi Adirika, MD, Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency, Jide Ikeako, Chief Chinedu Ezeora and Sir Edwin Chinedu.
