Accident claims eight in Agulu

TRAGEDY occurred on Monday morning along  Awka-Agulu Road shortly after Agulu  Lake, where a fatal accident  involving  five vehicles claimed 10 lives.

The  truck with registration number, Abia XB 285 MBA, loaded with roofing heavy metals lost control while descending the Ugwu Court, close to Golden Tulip Hotel, Agulu. Victims were rushed to Saint Joseph Hospital, Adazi, where 10 people were confirmed dead, some on life support, while others are receiving treatment. It was also recorded that the driver of one of the buses is dead while the truck driver survived but with injuries.

The state governor, Chief Willie Obiano left the Exco meeting at the Government House, Awka, to visit the scene along  with some members of the State Executive Council and the state’ Commissioner of Police, Mr John Bassy Abang.

Governor Obiano supervised the rescue operations by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps, led by the State Commandant, Mr Andrew Kumakpai.

Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency, Mr C. Y Agupugo, members of staff and men of the Red Cross were on hand to assist with the evacuation and opening the Agulu road to traffic.

Governor Obiano expressed sympathy with the family members who lost their loved ones and assured them of his government’s support to the victims.
