Ramos backs Van Dijk to win Ballon d’Or

RAMOS is backing Virgil van Dijk to win the Ballon d’Or after leading Liverpool to Champions league glory last season. Van Dijk is battling with fellow frontrunners Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but has already beaten the pair to one major accolade, Uefa Men’s Player of the Year.

Despite a long and fiery rivalry with the Reds, Ramos thinks Van Dijk deserves the top award, saying: ‘Van Dijk is a great centre back, he’s played a very, very good season and if he’s still there it’s because he deserves it. ‘We always talk about the Ballon d’Or… Cris [Cristiano Ronaldo] and [Lionel] Messi.)

‘The fact that the chances are wider now for players other than forwards makes me happy.’ Luka Modric broke Messi and Ronaldo’s grip on the Ballon d’Or last year, becoming the first player since 2007 to beat the attacking duo to the award.

It has been over ten years since a defender has claimed the accolade, with Italian legend, Fabio Cannavaro winning the Ballon d’Or in 2006.

Ronaldo has won the award three of the last five years  Van Dijk has helped transform Liverpool’s defence since his big-money arrival in January 2017, turning the Reds into one of the most formidable defensive forces in the world.

Liverpool came up just short in the race for the Premier League title last term and currently lead the table after four games. Were Van Dijk to win the Ballon d’Or, he would add it to the Uefa Men’s Player of the Year and PFA Player of the Year awards he has already won for his exploits last season..
