IN LINE with fulfilling two of the six Rotary areas of focus, the Rotary Club of Awka Smithtown, Monday, donated over 300 school bags with toothbrushes and toothpastes to pupils of Central Primary School, Nando, in Anambra East Local Government Area.

In her remarks, President of the club, Uzoamaka Okonkwo, noted that Rotary’s aim is to do good to the world through maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, economic and community development, peace and conflict prevention-resolution, disease prevention and treatment, and water and sanitation hence the visit.

“Rotary is a service organisation that’s why we are here. We support people of the world with our resources and we know there are pupils here who do not have school bags; there are also those who do not know the importance of brushing their teeth. It’s important we start at this early stage to let them know why they should brush their teeth.”

On her part, headmistress of the school, Uche Emeka, on behalf of staff and pupils of the school, thanked members of Rotary Club of Awka Smithtown for the visit and for finding them worthy to be so selected.  In her words, “when it comes to visits such as this, we’re usually favoured and we cannot thank Rotary Club enough for this gesture.”

Speaking to National Light, some of the delighted pupils said they were happy with the gesture, noting that the toothbrush and paste will help them clean their tooth and also keep them free of germs as they would not want to develop toothaches.

Some others said they could then carry their books in the school bags, adding that they are very happy for the donations.  Over 300 pupils of the school got a school bag, exercise book, toothbrush, and tooth paste each.
