Obiano commissions ultramodern Coscharis rice mill

AS PART of State Government vision in promoting Agriculture, the Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano recently commissioned the Rice Mill at Igbariam in Anambra East of Anambra State.

 

The Mill, which is a public private partnership between the company and Anambra State Government witnessed the presence of notable figures in the scheme of things in Nigeria including the Governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emiefele, Minister of Agriculture and Rural development, Alhaji Sabo Nanono, represented by the Minister of State for Agriculture, Alhaji Mustapha Baba Shehiru.

 

Senator Victor Umeh, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Uchenna Okafor, former governor, Dame Virgy Etiaba, Service Chiefs, traditional rulers led by Chairman of South East Traditional Rulers’ Council, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, among others attended the event.

 

Governor Obiano said that the state had the capacity to feed the nation, stressed that Coscharis farm is one of the earlier investors that needed the aku luo uno call by his government, as the rice production capacity of the state has continued to increase, and presently increased to 345, 280 metric tonnes, as against the 80000 metric tonnes he met on assumption of office.

 

Governor Obiano, who said that state government has continuously formed strategic engagement of farmers in the state, pointed out that the state has since commenced year round planting in some areas of the state, adding that to meet its three-year projection plan, there is need for more lands and out growers.

 

While noting that Anambra is an emerging capital in food production, Governor Obiano called on the Central Bank of Nigeria, to expedite action and approve the N1.5 billion  from the accelerated agriculture production scheme, adding that the state has extended production in many agro sectors including animal husbandry.

 

Kebbi State Governor, Alhaji Baguda hinted that the investment has solved problems for millions of farmers in the state, as they have off take for production and better seedlings that will double or triple their yield., mostly as a result of resolute policies of President Mohammadu Buhari’s regime.

Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mustapha Baba Shehiru urged Nigerians and ndi Anambra in particular, to pick up interest in rice production and processing, calling on other states to  borrow a leaf from Anambra State in partnering the private sector.

 

Central Bank Governor, Dr Emefiele said that it was the investment is part of the call for the diversification of the economy by Buhari’s government which is already yielding results, applauded Governor Obiano for creating the enabling environment for investments to thrive in the state, urging other states to adopt same measures put in place by Anambra.

 

He continued that in May 2015, the CBN released 2 billion to the farm, N4 billion  in December, 2015, as well as N1billion in August 2019, out of which Coscharis farms had repayed over N800 million , despite last year’s flood set back, saying that such repayment commitment by Coscharis is commendable and encouraging, pledging commitment to partnering the private sector.

 

Earlier, the Commissioner for Agricultrue, Chief Nnamdi Onukwuba stressed that the collaboration of Anambra State government and investors is yielding results, stressing that the state hopes to in due course, develop outgrower scheme in other parts of the state.
