1980 Washington Grammar School Old Students reunite, renovate school building



THE Principal, Washington Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha, David Chukwurah has called on old students of the school to emulate the class of 1980, in positioning the school for greater academic heights through their developmental contribution to the school. 

Mr. Chukwurah stated this while appreciating the 1980 set of the school for remembering their alma mater, by renovating the dilapidated storey building housing the SS1 Block, promising not to relent in entrenching the school excellent academic record, and robust extracurricular activities. He appealed to the association to look into other areas they could assist to meet the school needs.

While commissioning the renovated building, president of the 1980 Old Students Association of the school, Frank Nwokolo urged the school management to put the building to best use and strive to maintain academic excellence which people reckons the school with. He advised students to shun cultism, while appealing to Parent Teachers Association (PTA) to help in advancing the course of the school.

The event which also doubles as a reunion and election of key officers into the association’s national body, kick started with the election of the association’s new executives at Olive Guest House, Sharon Gate GRA, Onitsha.

Chief Nwokolo after his election said besides having more students enroll in the school that he would project the school to greater heights, “I promise that the association would endeavour to have the school established as a household name.” The association’s new executive also has Patrick Onyebuchi as Vice President and Kenechukwu Obi as secretary of the association.

Speaking on behalf of the students, the Senior Prefect of the school, Ikechukwu Ezeh described the association’s gesture as a symbol of hope to the school stating that the association has succeeded in setting a pace in their alma mater, “we appreciate the fact that you have taken cognizance of our pressing need of securing our property, we promise to leave Washington Memorial Grammar School better than we met it.”

The event has Mr. Ugo Eze, Zonal Director of Education, Onitsha and Lady Ukpaka, Zonal Director of Education, ASUBBEB, Onitsha Zone.
