Medics demand enhanced budget for healthcare



AS DEMAND For health services across the country increases. The Chairman, Anambra State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association,  Emma Monago has called for at least five per cent budgetary allocation for health by the federal government.

Dr. Monago, who made the call while speaking to the press at Obosi viewed attention to health as a sine-qua-non towards achieving and ensuring healthy individuals. The NMA boss asked the federal government to increase its budget on health according to the prescription of the World Health Organization.

According to him, the provision should be replicated in all the states of the federation. The medical expert, who is a member of the governing board of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University expects all states budgetary allocation to place health as top priority.

On his part, a former chairman, Awka Zonal chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Oliver Onwughalu noted that the health sector demands sizeable budgetary allocation.

Dr. Onwughalu stressed that health should be given priority in view of its strategic importance in people’s lives.  The medical expert described many Nigerians as moving corpses whose health status are questionable and need attention.
