Between briefs and boxers
UNDERGARMENTS are items of clothing worn beneath outer clothes, usually in direct contact with the skin, although they may comprise more than a single layer. They serve to keep outer garments from being soiled or damaged by bodily excretions, to lessen the friction of outerwear against the skin, to shape the body, and to provide concealment or support for parts of it. In cold weather, long underwear is sometimes worn to provide additional warmth.
History has revealed that the loincloth is the simplest form of underwear and was perhaps the first undergarment worn by human beings. In warmer climates, the loincloth was often the only clothing worn (effectively making it an outer garment rather than an undergarment), as was doubtless its origin, but in colder regions, the loincloth often formed the basis of a person’s clothing and was covered by other garments. In most ancient civilizations, this was the only undergarment available.
The loincloth continues to be worn by people around the world – it is the traditional form of undergarment in many Asian societies, for example. In various, mainly tropical, cultures, the traditional male dress may still consist of only a single garment below the waist or even none at all, with underwear as optional.
By the early 20th century, the mass-produced undergarment industry was booming, and competition forced producers to come up with all sorts of innovative and gimmicky designs to compete.
Undergarments are generally of two types- those that are worn to cover the torso and those that are worn to cover the waist and legs, although there are also garments which cover both. Different styles of undergarments are generally worn by females and males. Undergarments commonly worn by females today include bras and panties, while males often wear briefs, boxer briefs, or boxer shorts. Items worn by both sexes include T-shirts, sleeveless shirts (also called singlet or tank tops), bikini underwear, thongs, and G-strings.
Underwear is worn for a variety of reasons. They keep outer garments from being soiled by perspiration, urine, semen, faeces and menstrual blood. Men’s briefs serve the same function for the male genitalia, and women’s brassieres provide support for the breasts.
A corset may be worn as a foundation garment to alter a woman’s body shape. For additional support and protection when playing sports, men often wear more tightly fitting underwear, including jockstraps and jockstraps with cup pocket and protective cup.
Women may wear sports bras which provide greater support, thus increasing comfort and reducing the chance of damage to the ligaments of the chest during high-impact exercises such as jogging.
Mr Emmanuel Johnson shares his experience and his preferred underwear during an interview. He said “I personally love boxer briefs. If I wear boxer shorts, I’m hard most of the time. I personally believe that men wear boxer shorts as a rite of passage from boyhood and adolescence into adulthood.
A lot of boys are dressed in whitish tights by their moms at or around the age of four or five years old. Once a boy turns 21, it’s likely he’s seen boxer shorts in advertisements, online, or even on his friends.
Boxer shorts are marketed as the grown-up version of white briefs. Boxer shorts provide zero support and they bunch up under jeans and are impossibly uncomfortable under leggings.
White briefs are fairly common for many men, even after adolescence passes. To my eyes, they look awful – barely an upgrade from a diaper. On the positive side, at least they provide some support. Boxer shorts provide no support at all.
A civil engineer, Mr Stephen Udoye, also stated the two underwear options for men he knows in most of the major retail stores and as well wears. He said they were either briefs or boxer shorts. “I’m not familiar with boxer briefs. They appear to be some sort of hybrid”.
Mr Johnson Edward offered a theory about men’s underwear choices as it turns up some women.
“Women seem to prefer the way boxer shorts look on men. One woman I knew told me that white briefs were a total turn-off for her in bed. Men are often willing to do just anything to please women. So this simply explains why many men wear boxers instead of white briefs.
Not wearing underpants under outer clothing is known in slangs as freeballing for men and as going commando for either sex. The act of a woman not wearing a bra is sometimes referred to as freeboobing”, he added.
A 45-year old business man, Mr Edwin Ezeudu said for a man to wear underwear under boxers depends upon the situation. He said “for instance, if we are at home we don’t prefer wearing briefs under the boxers. It just feels a lot more comfortable without them.
But when we are out and are wearing boxers, we surely wear briefs as well. It keeps the thing in place and prevents unwanted movements. Without them the space between our legs would be the only centre of attraction in this universe”.
