AN ULTRA-MODERN chemotherapy centre will soon take off in
Anambra State.
Anambra State
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vincent Okpalla, dropped this hint in Awka on
Tuesday.
Dr. Okpalla disclosed this development while defending the
2020 budget estimate of Ministry of Health before Anambra House of Assembly
(ANHA) Committee on Health in Awka.
According to him,
the facility is coming as part of Gov. Willie Obiano’s legacy projects aimed
not only at eradicating, but also nipping cancer related ailments in their bud
anywhere they may be detected in the state.
He further expressed
confidence that with intervention funds from both federal government and donor
agencies, secondary healthcare institutions in Onitsha, Enugwu-Ukwu and
Ekwulobia will receive additional boost.
Charging Ministry of
Health to execute all the projects they captured in their 2020 budget estimate
as his committee will embark on oversight visit to the project sites to see how
funds approved for them was expended, while making a contribution at the public
hearing, Chairman House Committee on Health, Dr. Carter Umeh noted that health
is primary to wellbeing of the people.
Similarly, Chairman
of Anambra State Sports Development Commission, Tony Oli stated that government plans to spend
aboutN900 million on the development of community sports through establishment
of facilities to enhance sporting events at the grassroots.
Oli disclosed this
at the State Assembly Complex, Awka, yesterday, shortly after the budget
defence of the commission.
According to him,
there were two major capital projects in the commission’s 2020 budget,
stressing that sports commission would embark on development of community-based
sports arenas across the 187 communities in the state.
Speaking further,
Oli explained that the sports arenas would be school-based to encourage
sporting activities in schools, adding that the second major project in the
commission’s budget was project for construction of Awka Township Stadium which
he said would be renamed and remodeled into a state-of-the-art Anambra Township
Stadium to host major sporting events in the state.
