Multiple accidents on Lagos Bridge

Many feared dead

MICHAEL Otedola Estate Bridge, along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, was yesterday rocked by a fatal accident that involved many vehicles. The accidents occurred a short distance and caused a traffic gridlock that snarled along the axis.

  The mishaps happen when five vehicles collided at different portions of the bridge within a few space of time around mid-day. It wrecked several destructions with many feared dead and many more sustaining severe injuries among commuters.

  Though the immediate cause of the accidents are yet to be ascertained, an eyewitness who identified herself as Remilekun Abiola said the chain of accidents which occurred at Berger Roundabout area happened after an early morning downpour.

  She however blamed over speeding motorists and sloppy nature of the road as well as the heavy rainfall for the havoc which claimed several lives.

  Officers of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) were seen in the scene rescuing victims. Most were taken to nearby hospitals in Magodo, Omole, Ikeja, Ogba and Berger areas.

  Other rescue agencies that worked round-the-clock at the accident scene included men of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of Lagos State Police Command, Lagos State Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) among others.
