Onitsha: hit-and-run driver kills road sweeper

A ROAD sweeper in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Tuesday, lost her life when a Mitsubishi vehicle hit her and crushed her to death.

  The accident which occurred near Premier Brewery Bus stop at the Bridge Head end of Enugu-Onitsha Expressway attracted huge crowd to the scene.

  The driver of the vehicle sped off having realised that he had knocked someone down.

  Eye witness, Kingsley Nnadi told National Light reporter that the road sweeper whose name could not be ascertained on the spot was busy doing her work in the morning when the bus coming from the Bridge Head through the service lane hit her, crushing her to death instantly.

  “The Mitsubishi L300 bus was coming from the service lane with the woman focused on her job. No one can tell what influenced the driver that made him lose sight of the woman and crush her to death.”

  National Light reporter gathered that the woman’s lifeless body was taken to unidentified hospital by ATMA officers on duty close by.

  Some eyewitnesses said that the driver of the vehicle was apprehended while some others said he was not.

  When National Light reporter called the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed on the development, he stated that they are yet to get information about the incident and promised to return the call as soon as they receive such.

  National Light calls to the Director, ASWAMA for clarification could not yield fruit as at the time of filling this report as his mobile phone remained switched off and message sent to him on phone to that effect is yet to be replied.

  Managing Director of the Road Sweepers said he just heard the information as at the time National Light called on him but he is yet to confirm whether the victim is a staff under his agency.
