THE Anambra International Cargo Airport
Project at Umueri, in Anambra East Local Government Area, is on course and would be accomplished by the
present administration of Governor Willie Obiano .
Commissioner for
Transport, Dr. Christian Madubuko, gave this assurance while speaking with
journalists in his office at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka, describing the
airport as a critical initiative to boost economic and industrial revolution in
the state.
Dr. Madubuko
confirmed that construction of the airport would gear up at the sprawling site
at Umueri, Anambra East LGA, once the rainy season receded.
He also clarified
that the new colour for commercial buses and tricycle (‘Keke’) was intended to
curb sundry crimes, stressing that all commercial vehicle operators in the
state should comply with the policy or risk impoundment, warning that
defaulters would have their vehicles impounded.
Dr. Madubuko reiterated that the present administration
placed top priority on the security of lives and property of the citizenry.
On the recent installation of traffic control lights at
strategic junctions around Awka capital city, the commissioner explained that
it was intended to facilitate easy traffic movement and promote the beauty of
Awka while other major cities like; Onitsha, Nnewi and Ekwulobia would also
benefit from the traffic control lights.
Reacting to the recent protest by tipper drivers against an
alleged imposition of N2000 fee per trip of sand instead of a fixed daily fee,
as applicable to other commercial vehicle drivers, he explained that the issue
had been resolved amicably. “Nobody imposed extra fee out of an agreement with
the state government”.
Dr. Madubuko
confirmed that many people who indulged in selling illegal emblems to motorists
had been arrested and jailed, and for other offences, too.
He hinted that a new traffic law was underway to penalise offences like using GSM handset while driving, driving against traffic (one way) and others, pointing out that offenders would be summarily tried by mobile courts and may also undergo psychiatric test.
According to him, “anybody who beats or disobeys the traffic
lights will be arrested and charged. We
must have to learn the culture of doing things the right and normal way”
