World Stroke Day: Experts urge healthy lifestyle

2019 World Stroke Day with theme, ‘Don’t Be The One’ was last week observed with a call to people to engage in good lifestyle to help reduce the risk of stroke.

  According to Dr Okoye of Medical Centre, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), medical checkup is very important, especially for people with hypertension.

  He said that a stroke occurred when the supply of blood to the brain was either interrupted or reduced. “When this happens, the brain does not get enough oxygen or nutrients, and brain cells start to die. … That part of the brain is deprived of blood and oxygen, which leads to the death of the brain cells. The part of the body that it controls will stop working. There are risk factors of stroke namely; high cholesterol, high blood pleasure, diabetes mellitus and smoking. Also rupture of a blood vessel in the brain leads to stroke..

  Apart from healthy diet, Dr. Okoye advised people to avoid smoking and drinking too much alcohol to prevent stroke. “These lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of high cholesterol levels, blood pressure and also regular medical checkup can help prevent stroke”.

  Pharmacist Peter Kubo of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), defined stroke as a disease that affects the arteries leading to the brain and that strokes are brain attacks. “They occur when the blood supply to the brain becomes blocked. A stroke is a medical emergency that needs immediate medical attention. Stroke is very deadly all over the world.”

  He said that stroke occur when part of the brain loses its blood supply and stops working. “Stroke causes the part of the body that the injured brain controls to stop working. It is also called cerebrovascular accident or “brain attacks”. The types of stroke include: Ischemic stroke (part of the brain loses blood floor); hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding occurs within the brain); and transient ischemic attack or mini stroke.
