Pupils in Onitsha schools take fire precaution lessons

TO safeguard the safety of students in schools against the hazards of fire outbreak, some secondary schools in  Onitsha metropolis have taken far reaching measures.

  A visit to  Urban Girls Secondary School, Fegge, Onitsha, by the press was quite revealing as the principal of the college, Lady Franca Ego Obi  was on top of the situation.

  Dr. Obi disclosed that the college is well equipped with fire extinguishers in every classroom block with students trained to handle the devices in the event of any fire outbreak.

  According to the principal, her administration has ensured a thorough environmental sanitation of the college both within and outside with a view to rid the premises of all forms of inflammable materials like pieces of papers, etc.

  She stressed that proactive meetings have been held in readiness for any fire outbreak. 

  Obi used the occasion to brief the press on her trip to Dubai as one out of the two schools’ principals selected for the on the job administrative training by the Anambra Government.

  At the Eastern Academy Girls Secondary School, Onitsha, the principal of the college, Dr. Mrs. Stella Umunna, told the press that the institution has taken some precautionary measures to combat any fire outbreak.

  According to her, fire extinguishers supplied by the Anambra State Government have been placed at every classroom block and in the school’s laboratory in the event of any fire outbreak.

  Dr. Umunna further stated that bucket sands are also in place to combat fire outbreak within the school premises.

  She appreciated the quick responses being recorded by the men of the fire services of the state in  case of managing fire disasters and cases of petrol tankers’ fall after the ugly experience of the October 16,hOchanja fire disaster.

  The principal expects that all logistics be put in place to combat fire disasters in the state.

  She narrated the ordeal the institution faced during the Ochanja fire incident as one of the institutions located near the scene of the mayhem.

  According to her, in panic, parents and guardians pulled down a section of the school wall to gain entrance into the school compound to ascertain the safety of their children and wards.
