RAHEEM Sterling has begun discussions over a new contract at
Manchester City, according to John Cross of the Mirror. Sterling’s current deal
at the Sky Blues will see him through until 2023, but they are now willing to
offer the winger improved terms on a deal already worth up to £300,000 per
week.
It’s only been 12
months since Sterling’s last extension at the club. However, the significant
progress that he has made at Manchester City is a huge reason why the club will
be keen to tie him down to yet another deal. He will also then have the wages
to match his enormous contribution to Pep Guardiola’s side.
Last season, he
finished with 17 goals from 34 Premier League matches, an impressive feat for a
winger. In 2017/18, he had an additional goal to his name while appearing 33
times, but this season is by far the most impressive, having scored seven goals
in just 11 games.
Every player will
have fluctuations in form throughout the course of a campaign, so it’s highly
unlikely that Raheem Sterling will continue that ratio going forward. However,
the confidence it will give him could boost his performances and, if he
finishes with a similar season to the two prior, he will no doubt be one of the
star men for Gareth Southgate’s England side at Euro 2020.
Sterling’s stock has
risen considerably since his move from Liverpool, and Cross reports that he has
now become the most marketable player in football with deals with Nike,
Gillette and the FIFA gaming series.
Tying him down to
another new contract is a further statement of intent from Manchester City. If
any side is planning on making a move for him, they’re now going to have to pay
top dollar for one of football’s biggest talents.
