Nkwelle-Ezunaka gets new town union executive

IT WAS jubilation galore as the people of Nkwelle-Ezunaka, in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, successfully conducted an election of a new executive committee to pilot the affairs of the community in the next three years.

The doggedly contested election was won by a former councilor representing the town in Oyi LGA, Leonard Areh Onyenze, as the President-General with a landslide margin of 392 votes to beat Messrs Emmanuel Onuorah and Chinedu Udeagwu, who polled 51 and 30 votes, respectively.

Most of the posts in the NEU executive committee were returned unopposed except the assistant secretary which Mr. Anthony Okechukwu Onwuanyi clinched by defeating Mr. Anthony Nweke after scoring 395 votes against 30 votes; and the tenure of the new NEU executive committee took immediate effect.

The election was originally scheduled to hold on December 26, during the annual general meeting of the town, but the process was disrupted by some violent youths which prompted its postponement before the intervention of the state government through the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, Town Union Matters, Chief Greg Obi, who instructed that the election be conducted on Monday ,December 30, thus breaking the jinx of serial caretaker administrative system in the community.

Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma (Ebube Muonso), with Rev. Fr. Akachukwu Ilozue, both indigenous priests of the town, and Mr Dike Ndulue, a retired permanent secretary, were among prominent participants in the election together with red cap chiefs.

In a post-election speech, the new PG, Mr Onyenze, a graduate of Peace and Conflict Resolution, vowed to restore enduring peace, unity, mutual co-existence and respect for the age-long revered customs and tradition of the ancient community “now facing an adulteration and threat of extinction from influx of settlers.”

Rev. Fr. Obimma also addressed the people, urging them to rise against pettiness and the ugly trends of perennial crises in the town arising from the greed and selfishness of some egocentric elements who were hitherto retarding the peace and progress of the community, while he pledged total solidarity with the new NEU executive committee.

He cautioned the masterminds of the lingering leadership crisis in the town to retrace their steps as nobody could claim to be bigger than community or hold the people hostage through senseless misguided schisms, gagging and hoodwinking some gullible youths to foment trouble to destabilise the community.

The acting PG and chairman of the out-gone caretaker committee of the union, Sir (Dr) Peter Nweke, had earlier appealed to the people to conduct themselves in mature and orderly manner for the success of the election and also thanked the state government for affording them the opportunity to serve in that capacity towards moving the town forward.

Sir Peter Nweke further expressed gratitude to Governor Willie Obiano for his magnanimous support and location of infrastructural projects in the community, especially the street lightening and “Choose Your Project” scheme which the town benefitted from the first and second phases to modernise their town hall and construction of two standard daily markets in the town with lock-up and open stalls.

Chairman of the Election Screening Committee,  Chukwudi Onwuanyi, expressed delight that the election was free, fair, credible and also conducted peacefully under the supervision of state government representatives and observers from the Anambra State Association of Town
