IT WAS a sad Tuesday at Amawbia Junction in Awka South LGA of Anambra State metal welding workshop, as a petrol tanker under-going some repairs exploded and killed the welder instantly, while three other persons were  in critical conditions due to severe burns from the inferno .

National Light  gathered that the cause of the explosion was because the tanker had remnants of petroleum products in it which ignited the fire due to lightening from the Welder’s machines .

Another source had it that problem started when a fuel tanker driver drove into the workshop in the afternoon and demanded that his tank be welded but instead of the owner of the workshop allowing the tank to cool, he persuaded the welder to start working on the vehicle, saying that the driver was in haste.

According to an eye witness who spoke on the condition of anonymity, shortly after the welder started working on the vehicle, the tanker exploded, burning the young man to death, injured the owner of the workshop and two women, one of whom is a food vendor who went to collect her plates from the workshop when the incident occurred.

The source who disclosed that such incidence has become a yearly occurrence, recalled that about five years ago, a worker collapsed and died inside a tank while working on it. He continued that recently, another worker also collapsed inside a tank but was resuscitated.

An eye witness described the ugly incident,as unfortunate, more so as the man who was burnt got newly married with a new born baby.

Speaking on the unfortunate incident , Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission in Anambra State, Andrew Ayodele Kumapayi , said that the  ill-fated petrol tanker shouldn’t have been taken to the place because he believed that they were traces of remnants of fuel in the vehicle .

Kumapayi noted that it was the welding works on the vehicle that culminated into the disaster that transpired at the welder’s workshop . He said one person was confirmed dead instantly and three others were rushed to the hospital .

The FRSC boss, however, advised that before repair works can be carried out on any petrol tanker , such vehicle should be taken to a certified mechanic to ascertain that there is nothing remaining in the tanker to avoid recurrent disaster situations

He explained that chemicals should be used to flush out remnants of petroleum products from the vehicles before any repair work commenced , noting that quack welders shouldn’t undertake such jobs except if they were certified because the explosion , according to him , took place at a quack welder’s workshop .

Meanwhile, it took the rapid response of the officers of the Federal Road Safety Commission , the state fire fighters , the police and other agencies to have the inferno under control to avert further escalation of catastrophes .

Efforts to get the owner of the workshop was unsuccessful as he was in a critical condition in an undisclosed hospital. The remains of the deceased has been deposited in a mortuary and the injured receiving  treatment in a hospital.
