Man jailed 14 yrs for raping minor

AKWA IBOM High Court, sitting in Eket has sentenced a 35-year-old man, Isangedighi Ime Dan to 14 years imprisonment for raping a seven-year-old girl.

Isangedighi Dan, an Indigene of Uguo in Esit Eket Local Government Area, is a close friend to the father of the minor.

He was convicted by Justice Nsemeke Daniel after he was found guilty of having carnal knowledge of the little girl for three consecutive times in one week (January 1, 4, 6) 2016 at No. 2 Udofa Avenue, Eket, where the victim and her four-year-old sister lived, who were abandoned by their father, a police corporal attached to Onna Police Station.

Delivering Judgment, Justice Daniel explained that the minor and her sister had run to their grandmother who lived at 17 Nnama Street to report to her that their father abandoned them in the house without food or money and travelled to Lagos for a special duty.

The grandmother was said to have taken them to the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Uyo where she lodged a report against her son for failing to provide for the upkeep of his children, whose wife had separated from him.

On their way back to Eket, the little girl told her granny that she was defiled by Isangedighi after giving her N50 to buy biscuit.

A medical report from Immanuel Hospital Eket which was an exhibit before the court showed that the seven-year-old girl had Virginal Candidiasis and confirmed that the sexual assault was true.

The presiding judge expressed disappointment over the attitude of the police officer whom he said should have protected his children but however, defended his friend for raping his own daughter and sentenced him accordingly.
