NNAMDI Azikiwe University has successfully consummated its 53rd inaugural lecture with an erudite professor of international repute Oby Okechukwu Okonkwor, taking centre stage in women participation in sports and leadership.

The Professor of Human Kinetics in the Faculty of Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, masterfully delivered the topic, “Gender Issues in Women Participation is sports and leadership to achieve the sustainable development goals in Nigeria”.

According to Professor Okonkwor, women should be courageous in asserting themselves creditably in the competitive global arena.

She challenged the relegation of women to the background of “feminine inferiority” to their male folk, especially in the contemporary African tradition, and urged the women to rise above such central inhibitions

In sports, Professor Okonkwor denied the poor publicity given to women in sports when compared to that of the male sports where media attention is heavily focused on.

According to her, the media should be fair in the reportage of female sports which have earned prominence globally.

Taking delight in being a sports ambassador during her hey days in the University of Lagos and beyond, and her globe trotting encounters in sporting activities, Professor Okonkwor urged that women be accommodated side by side their male counterparts in all spheres of endeavour.

She mentioned Beatrice Utondu, a product of Uwani Secondary School Enugu, as one of the stars she nurtured to one of the Olympic games where she excelled as an athlete.

In a remark, the Vice Chancellor of UNIZIKk Professor Charles Esimone represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Frederick John Odibo, noted the importance of the imperatives of the uiversity inaugural lecture in providing an intellectual harvest for the university community and  participants.
