Yahoo boys clash with police in Ekiti

PANDEMONIUM enveloped Omisanjana area of Ado Ekiti as men of the Ekiti State Police Command and some youths suspected to be yahoo engage themselves in a bloody clash.

  The incident which occurred yesterday threw the suburb into confusion as residents and road users scampered for safety.

  During the crisis, the police officers were said to have fired gunshots into the air, while the suspects also trooped out with various dangerous weapons in self defense.

  It was gathered that trouble started when the police patrol team stormed the area to arrest some suspected yahoo boys.

  However, while making the arrest, some irate youths who were not satisfied with the development trooped out and obstructed the police patrol team, a situation that led to the crisis.

  The youths in their large number reportedly overpowered the police officers and released two of the suspects who have been arrested and handcuffed.

  In addition, the livid youths reportedly smashed bottles on the road and made bon fire to register their displeasure in what they described as illegal arrest by the police.

  The situation left many commuters and motorists stranded as the protesting youths also barricaded the roads to show their grievances.

  Two of them who spoke with our reporter, said they were stylists and were in their shop when the police stormed their shops and arrested them.

  They said.” That has been their style,(the police) whenever they see any young man looking good or wearing dreadlocks, automatically such person is a yahoo boy.

  “We stood for our right, because we know we are not yahoo boys, we are stylists, every young man now is a fraudster they said.”

  When contacted, the Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Police Command, Mr Sunday Abutu said the police team stormed the area based on information that some hoodlums were operating in the area.

  He confirmed that two of the suspects who were already arrested and handcuffed were forcefully released by the hoodlums while a police officer was badly injured.

  He however said that three of them were later rearrested by another patrol team and are currently in the police custody.
