Anambra ready to tackle Lassa fever outbreak – Okpala

ANAMBRA State Health Commissioner, Vincent Okpala has assured inhabitants of the state of the government’s determination and capacity to respond to any outbreak of Lassa fever in the state.

  The commissioner who gave the assurance at a recent press briefing in Awka, expressed satisfaction at the way the index case of the disease was managed by state Health Emergency Response Team.

  “We followed the national guidelines in managing the case; from isolation and sample collection to sample testing”, he narrated.

  Dr Okpala said the sample test showed positive for Lassa fever while the case was swiftly and safely transported to the viral centre in Ebonyi State Capital, Abakaliki.

  He announced that sequel to the index case, Anambra State Government has activated a public Health Emergency Operation Centre which is under the direction of the National Coordination Centre.

  “The state Ministry of Health and its partners in the emergency operations centre have taken all the necessary precautions for managing situations”, Okpala said.

  He also pointed out that Lassa fever can be spread through direct contact with urine, feaces, saliva or blood of infected rats and vomits and other body fluids of an infected person.
