THE  Nigerian Ports Authority, Onne Port Complex, has identified deplorable state of East-West Road, attacks on vessels in the Gulf of Guinea, especially in Bonny, Brass and Yenagoa by pirates as challenges facing shipping operations in Onne Port, Port Harcourt.

The Port Manager, Alhassan Abubakar, expressed dissatisfaction over the deplorable state of the East-West Road, which leads to the port complex.

Abubakar on Saturday, reportedly  explained that though pirate attacks on vessels on the Gulf of Guinea had reduced, there was need for a continued improvement of security to help shipping businesses in Eastern Ports.

He said, “Onne Port Complex is not without challenges. Some of the challenges confronting the port are the vessels attack in the Gulf of Guinea by pirates and armed sea robbers, particularly at the coast of Bonny, Brass and Yenagoa.

“The incidences have, however, reduced in 2019 and we hope this will further lead to improvement, to help shipping businesses in the Eastern Ports.   The deplorable condition of East-West Road leading to the Port access road is a major concern to businesses in the port.

“Onne Port will continue to forge ahead in spite of these challenges. The port is poised to achieve more feat in the years ahead,” Abubakar said.
