Enugu Int’l Trade Fair begins amid hiccups

LACK of structures at the permanent site of the Enugu International Trade Fair like that of Kaduna and Lagos has attracted some level of condemnation during the opening ceremonies of the on-going 31st Enugu International Trade Fair by participants.

Speaking during the opening ceremonies of the event, Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mariam Katagum described the dearth of befitting structures and facilities at the permanent site of the Enugu International Trade Fair as bad, but expressed optimism that the federal government would soon come to the rescue of the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Mines, Industry and Agriculture (ECCIMA) by giving the fair structures befitting its international status.

Ambassador Katagum who promised to take the message to the president stated that trade fairs are in line with the development agenda of the federal government, pointing out that only a fair conducted in a conducive atmosphere that can attract quality participation which will usher in the envisaged investments.

According to him, “I think it is natural that the Enugu International Trade Fair be brought to the same level with that of Kaduna and Lagos. It is unfortunate that even the permanent site of the Lagos International Trade has been taken over by some individuals, that is why the last fair in Lagos was organized at the Tafawa Balewa square.

“It is unfortunate also, but we will continue to work hard to achieve a complete Private Sector Participation in the business of government in the areas of trade and investment,” she explained.

In his welcome address, President of Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA), Emeka Nwandu said that trade fairs offer great opportunities for industrialists, investors, buyers and sellers to interact, exchange business ideas and share experiences for investment promotion and general economic growth.

Sir Nwandu however promised that ECCIMA will continue to sustain its effort and continue to improve on the standard of the fair. The ECCIMA boss however revealed that his association had written 23 letters to the federal government requesting for construction of the fair site to look like the two other International Trade Fairs in Lagos and Kaduna to no avail.

The theme of the 31st Enugu International Trade Fair is “Advancing the Growth of SMEs through corporate governance for rapid economic development”.
